How overseas artists stage a performance in China

Bringing an overseas artist to mainland China takes several steps, from booking the act to running the show on the day. Based in Shanghai, WARUDO KAOSU supports the entire process:

■ Booking and planning: we settle the dates, fees, and creative direction, and align the promoter and the artist on terms.

■ Securing the venue: we select a venue to fit the scale of the show and confirm the rental agreement, load-in, and equipment.

■ Performance permit: a commercial performance in China requires an application to, and approval from, the local culture and tourism authority. We prepare the program, performer information, and contracts for review. Approval takes time, so a schedule with room to spare is essential.

■ Visas and work authorization: we arrange the visas, invitation letters, and other paperwork performers need to enter and work in the country.

■ Technical check and rehearsal: we confirm the technical rider, including PA, and coordinate the rehearsal on the day.

■ Ticketing and promotion: we handle sales through local ticketing platforms and promotion on Weibo, WeChat, and other channels.

■ On-site operations: we run reception, interpretation, PA, QR-code payment, and the rest of the on-the-ground operation.

This is only a general outline; the exact steps and timelines vary with the show, the venue, and the time of year.
